Private Practice - I'm a California licensed Naturopathic Doctor. I use counseling, diet, lifestyle modification, supplements and vitamins, lab-work, homeopathy, herbal medicine, IV nutrient therapy and dreamwork to help bring my patients back to health.
Clinic Supervisor - I'm also a clinic supervisor at Bastyr University in San Diego. My role as clinic supervisor involves working with 4rth year naturopathic interns in their final year of school as they see patients in a supervised clinic setting.
Education - I have eight years of postsecondary education. I completed my undergraduate studies with honors in psychology at Queen’s University, Kingston Ontario and did my post-graduate doctoral training in Naturopathic Medicine at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine, in Toronto, Ontario.
Additional Training - I have additional training in Ayurvedic Medicine with Matthew Remski of Toronto's Renaissance Yoga and Ayurveda; Mind/Body medicine with Arvin Jenab ND, IV Nutritional Therapy with Virginia Osborne ND and Brenden Cochran ND; and Dream Interpretation with Christopher Sowton ND. Dr. Cowan is also a member of the International Association for the Study of Dreams and has a special interest in dream work.
Personal Philosophy - It is my belief that Naturopathic Doctors have an important role in the current medical system that involves:
Taking the time to understand patient’s health concerns and properly explaining treatment options, lab results and diagnostic processes
Keeping up to date with current scientific literature while keeping an open mind to alternative or more eclectic health philosophies and applying their healing modalities when appropriate
Encouraging patients to “first, do no harm,” even when the road to recovery may be more challenging, or take longer than riskier or more invasive approaches to wellness
I am committed to providing personalized healthcare and believes that good medicine stems from understanding both the person with the disease and the disease that affects the person.
